Attracting more Readers: Dr. Aaron D. Lewis on Dressing Attention-grabbing Book Covers

Almost 90 percent of the initial book-buying decision is sparked by just a single glance at the book cover. Best-selling writer and founder of two publishing companies, Dr. Aaron D. Lewis knows that the cover design process should be given a great deal of time and attention.

Especially for self-published or indie authors, the book cover can be just as difficult to make as writing a whole novel from start to finish. Most readers would instantly notice that self-published books’ covers are bland, boring, and uninteresting, making them think that these books are “unprofessional,” and its authors “unskilled” and “novice.”

Book covers matter so much that one female author took to the Web her disappointment over her publishers who wanted to soften and feminize the cover of women’s published works that are neither soft nor feminine. In her recent Guardian article, author Lionel Shiver wrote, “I write a nasty book and they want a girly cover on it.”

Dr. Aaron D. Lewis adds that covers should not only matter to the reader but to the author as well. Publishers will always have the final say on the look of a book cover but even so, authors should not be afraid to express how they want it to look like. For self-publishers who are not photo-design savvy, they can find, hire, and brief someone to design the book cover for them because at the end of the day, having an amateur-looking cover can make the book stay on store shelves for a really long time or may not sell at all.
